4 types of AR experiences for driving engagement

Did you know Augmented reality comes in a variety of forms?

In this article, we explore 4 types of AR experiences you can create in order to drive engagement.

Projection-based AR Experiences (Markerless AR)

Projection-based AR allows you to place 3D models, images and videos in your physical space. As the most robust form of AR, it can be interactive and supports animated 3D objects and annotations.

Typically, projection-based AR has been limited to single object projections on web-based experiences or the need for Apps, but with Imersian, one can interact with multiple items in AR solving real-world challenges with online shopping and education.

For example, it may show you if your future sofa and carpet will fit and look into that space.

Recognition-based AR Experiences (Marker based AR)

Recognition-based AR allows you to point your phone to QR codes, pictures bodies and faces to overlay AR content.

How does this work? These QR codes, pictures, faces, bodies act as markers, that once detected by the AR platform, overlays 3D content on these markers.
Common use cases include augmented posters and business cards, AR face filters and virtual apparel try-ons.

Location-based AR Experiences

These experiences are tied to a location and employ the sensors of smartphones for providing location-based AR experiences.
Reading the GPS, compass, and accelerometer on your smart smartphone, Location Based AR allows you to lock objects to particular locations and only display content when the device is physically at the location.

The most well-known example of this type of AR is Pokemon Go, where you would find Pokemon in predetermined locations.

Though location-based AR is extremely powerful especially for advertising and marketing purposes, due to the limitations of our current devices to map interiors and multi-level buildings it only allows for applications in open public spaces and ground levels.

Superimposition Based AR Experiences

Superimposition finds and replaces physical objects with an augmented version. For example, in architecture and construction, incomplete building elements can be overlayed with proposed plans, or replace existing furniture within a space with virtual furniture.

These 4 types of AR are increasingly becoming widely adopted, especially as apps, but to make AR more accessible for the everyday user, more seamless web-based experiences are required.

This is where Imersian truly shines to enable you to create scalable AR experiences for creators, brands and retailers.
